WITH the Olympics over and the Paralympics due to start this weekend Glazebury pensioner Norman Tildsley says he was delighted to watch Leigh MP Andy Burnham welcoming home the successful GB team alongside the PM, but sadly unable to congratulate any local sports stars.
Next time, maybe, Norman.
In the meantime he wonders if our luck would change if local games were included in the London games along with BMX biking and skateboarding – games like conkers, dobbers, trolly, truss weight or finger, thumb or dumb!
He suggests we could also clean up with a piggy team, welly throwing or a game his granddad invented from his Duckee Shoppee on Leigh Market – throwing the black pudding.
The rule was that a pudding had to be thrown from the obelisk at the Parish Church clock – and one Wiganer on witnessing a direct hit, and asked where it landed, said “summat to eayt”.
Tee hee.
As a world champion of 1939-1945, Norman, who recently received a war medal from the MP, says although he will be nearly 90 at the next games he would gladly volunteer to coach any of the above sports.
We could also have spitty bottle, whip and top, kick out can, skipping and two balls.
All in the spirit of good fun.
