No place for food ad

A LEIGH businesswoman has been offended by an A-board advertising “hot food now being served” every time she has driven past the entrance to Leigh cemetery in recent weeks.

She and visitors have been upset by the inappropriate words placed on the pavement by a nearby business.

Who can blame them? Not only is it disrespectful but it gives the impression that there is a cafe in the cemetery.

Despite polite requests to the business concerned by cemetery staff and the complainant the board keeps reappearing.

In these credit crunch times business can’t be blamed for trying to attract all the passing trade they can but there is a time and place for everything - and this is certainly not the place.

A spokesperson for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, who manage the cemetery site on behalf of the Council, said: “We have asked the owners to remove the signage from the pavement but they declined to do so.

“We have since contacted the council and their highways department about the matter.”

A spokesperson from Wigan Council 's traffic management team said: “An officer will visit the site to determine whether the sign constitutes an obstruction of the highway.

“If so, appropriate action will be taken. The sign will be removed either by agreement or enforcement.”
