IT has been suggested that the teaching of the spelling rhyme I before E except after C in junior schools could be stopped – because there are too many exceptions.
It’s been a bugbear in my house for many years.
Every time a word turned up where the rule didn’t apply the former-him indoors, not the best of spellers, would shout out the word – like weigh or Keith – and he didn’t need to say any more. I knew what was meant. It was one of his little annoyances about our hard to learn language.
Others included neighbour, either, weird, height, heifer, forfeit – even LEIGH. And many more...
I still use it, but in many cases it’s wrong, so it is fitting that it should go into room 101..
