Ticks for spelling

11:34am Wednesday 1st July 2009

THANKS to clever clogs M Stokey who enlightens me on the I before E rule: He/she writes: “The problem with your version of the spelling rule 'i before e except after c' is that you have missed out the first part of the rhyme ( I've never heard it) - 'if you want to say ee that rhymes with me, it's i before e except after c'. Height, weight, forfeit and neighbour do not contain the ee sound. Weird is a Scottish word and therefore an exception. Leigh is a proper noun as is Keith - many proper nouns do not conform to this rule.

There are definitely exceptions, such as specie and species but they are quite rare.

Good to know.
