This week the Journal’s Sophie Arnold goes behind the scenes at Leigh Spinners, which is celebrating 100 years in the town

LEIGH MP Andy Burnham stopped by to mark the centenary of the mill last Monday.

He has been helping Leigh Spinners to deal with the massive responsibility of preserving so much social history within its walls.

Impressed with the fact the mill was still manufacturing, Andy congratulated the company and the Horrocks family on their contribution to Leigh.

He said: “When I come down the East Lancashire Road after being away and I see it, you know you’re home. I think it is an amazing thing that it’s still here after all this time and they are still manufacturing here.

“I think most people think of it as a landmark and are proud of it and the company who have shown a massive commitment to Leigh over the years.

“This has been here for 100 years and the history of the town is bound up with it. It is a special day and it is amazing what has been achieved.”
