THERE was standing room only as a big crowd was treated to an evening of exciting Astley VIP Boxing Club fight action.

With special guests Jamie Moore, the former British and European champion, and actor Jamie Lomas, who played Warren Fox in Hollyoaks, on hand to present the trophies the crowd enjoyed 14 well matched contests at Leigh Miners.

Eleven-year-old Reegan Cooper started the show with a skills bout and was followed by Ethan Greenhalgh and Dan Meadows, who both scored points wins over good opponents, with Meadows beating last year's Welsh champion.

Seventeen-year-old Lewis Broad made the step up to the senior ranks but was narrowly outpointed, with Larry Lomotey and Steven Norris both beating opponents from the RAF on their debuts.

The most exciting fight of the night involved Tyldesley's Callum Green, who won a thrilling debut contest on points. Jamie Moore commented that it was the best amateur fight he had ever seen.

The crowd were on their feet throughout the contest which was fought at a relentless pace.

Leigh's Kristian Hackett produced a boxer-of-the-night performance to defeat an experienced opponent from Manchester and debutant Darren Williams scored a narrow points’ victory in a light heavyweight contest.

There was disappointment for the club's two most experience boxers though as both Andrew Fleming and Jonny Brown suffered narrow points’ defeats.

The show also included a performance by local singing star Scarlett Derry.
