New arrivals boost cricket club’s 2013 season preparations
9:00am Sunday 13th January 2013 in Sport
PREPARATIONS for the 2013 season at Leigh Cricket Club continue on a number of fronts.
A new arrival is Scott Cornish, a slow, left-arm bowler from Highfield.
Cornish had played at Highfield for a number of years but is relishing a new challenge at Leigh.
In 2012 he took 24 wickets at an average of just 23, with a best bowling day of 5 for 64.
Leigh’s new skipper Mattie McKiernan said that he was delighted with the signing of Cornish as he has a number of years experience under his belt at Liverpool Competition Premier League level yet is still young and ambitious to continue to improve.
Leigh are also in advanced talks with other players.
A number of the club’s junior players recently attended Wigan District representative trials.
At under 11s, Thomas Gunshorn, Ben Woods and Nathan Graham have all been successful in being selected for the district squad.
At under 13s level, Lewis Dove, Lewis Bailey, Daniel Hatton and Andrew Bradshaw were all selected.
Head coach Steve Bailey said he was delighted with the number of selections from the two age groups.
He received feedback that a number of other players who were nominated for the trials performed really well and should remain positive about their efforts and the level to which they are performing.
On the back of this continued success at junior level, Leigh Cricket Club expect to announce details of an Academy for its most talented performers.
Details will be announced soon.
Leigh Cricket Club continues to welcome new playing members for any of their three senior teams.
Anyone interested should call Dave Dove on 07712 202529 or call in at the club on Beech Walk, Leigh.
Girls will make up a good proportion of juniors at the weekly training sessions during the summer and a girls’ team will be up and running again.
Ellen Bradshaw and Rachel Downs have been nominated for Lancashire trials.
* JUNIOR coaching for potential and current cricketers aged up to school Year 6 will take place at Atherton Cricket Club, situated behind Howe Bridge Leisure Centre.
The initial coaching session and registration will be on Wednesday, January 30, at 6.30 pm when all costs and future coaching dates will be confirmed.
Call John Dharlson on 01942 874794 if you wish to attend.
