Clempner scores judo gold medal

LEIGH Judo Club’s Matthew Clempner won gold in the British Championships at the weekend.

The 27-year-old beat London 2012 Olympian Chris Sherrington, who hails from St Helens, in the final of the +100kg category.

UK number one Clempner, who moved to Leigh last year, finished third in the Sombo World Championships in Belarus last November, earning Britain’s first medal in the event in 20 years.

Clempner is seeking sponsorship to help fund his training for the Rio 2016 Olympic cycle and his push for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
