Fell runners strut their stuff

LEIGH Harriers’ youngest athletes were successful in the inaugural fell relays at Blackburn’s Witton Park.

The Leigh team won the under 12s girls’ race and finished second in the boys’ contest.

Leigh entered four junior teams in the relays run over a 3x2.5km course that included steep hills, tree roots, gates, steps and lots of mud.

Keely Hodgkinson led the girls’ team on the first of the three legs, running the fastest time of the day in 13mins 41secs.

She handed over to Joanna Smith, who kept the team place with 16mins 32secs.

Then the last and winning leg was run by Eve Williams, 15mins 28secs.

The boys’ team were led off by Joseph Wane, who handed over in third place with 13mins 20secs.

Kyle Jones ran the second leg, holding the place in 13mins 49secs.

Then Ben McLaughlin lifted the team to second with a last leg of 13mins 55secs.

Leigh’s B team of Billy Blain, 16mins 16secs, Shea Mellor, 14mins 30secs, and Connor Wyatt, 14mins 7secs, finished as fourth-placed team.

Leigh’s third boys’ team of Conner Law, 16mins 29secs, Coel Mellor, 14mins 8secs, and Alex Pickersgill, 15mins 48secs, were fifth.
