East reach plate final

LEIGH East women’s team claimed their place in the WARLA Winter League Plate Final by beating Batley 52-8.

East, winning 10-8 at half time, were dominant in attack and defence as they scored an additional 42 points.

Notable brilliant performances came from Jade Aspinall on debut, Charlotte Foley, Nat Weaving and Gillian Aspin.

Head coach Simon Reynolds said: "Going up to Batley with only 10 girls was going to be tough, especially when they had a full 17 and they could play a full 13 on the field at once due to cup rules, but the girls dug deep and reaped the rewards in the second half.”

The final will take place on Easter Sunday at Rochdale Mayfield.

East’s under 18s started off their 2013 preparations with a pre-season friendly win over arch-enemy Leigh Miners.

A strong defensive platform helped them claim a 26-16 victory with tries from Danny Grainey, Connor Johnson, Alex Holcroft, Josh Gilluley and Brad Roden. Conversions were kicked by Tom Worthington, two, and Brad Roden.

On Sunday, the under 18s play Newsome Panthers from Huddersfield in the National Cup at Ledgard Avenue, kick off 1.30pm, while the women’s team travel to Leeds to take on Whinmoor.
