Historic win for Leigh

Altrincham Kersal RUFC 5 Leigh RUFC 8

LEIGH continued fine form against opponents they had not not beaten in recent history.

Saturday’s success extends their North One West run to eight wins out of the last nine games.

Leigh started strongest in a scrappy match but lacked the continuity of recent weeks.

Elliott Ryan converted a fine penalty to give them a narrow lead that was maintained until the interval, with the home side missing two shots at goal.

Neither side were able to assert authority at the start of the second half, with Leigh not helped by having David Penn sin-binned after he took exception to foul play by his second-row opponent.

Leigh chose this moment to turn the game and when Penn returned they were well on top.

For the first time, they maintained possession and showed the required patience.

The ball was moved to full back Elliott Ryan, who was driven over by Adam Dyson and the forwards for a well-worked try.

Leigh then showed their excellent defensive qualities to close down the game. The home side did, however, score a late try to win a losing bonus point.
