MINERS Rangers went down to their first defeat of the National Conference League season as newly promoted and in-form Egremont were too strong on a traditional Cumbrian mudbath of a pitch.

Egremont, narrowly vanquished by Miners in the Conference Cup Final last season, showed just why they are hotly tipped to challenge at the top of the table this term with this crushing victory over a Miners side who are equally fancied.

While the 30 points difference between the teams might have been a little harsh on the visitors, the Gillfoot Park side were full value for their comfortable victory.

Miners were without Ross Bradley and Andrew Groves through work commitments while John Woods was forced from the action in the early stages as they battled up the slope in the first half.

Miners gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Ryan Monaghan squeezed in at the corner and Youds goaled from the touchline early in the second half.

But despite enjoying spells of pressure they could not make a further impression on the scoreboard as Egremont eased home.

Miners’ first team are at home against Ince Rose Bridge on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
