Emphatic win for Leigh cricketers as they aim to push for league title

AN emphatic 154-run victory over New Brighton bagged Leigh another 25 points to keep their Liverpool and District Premier League title hopes alive at Beech Walk on Saturday.
Paul Keenan scored his first Premier Division century in flamboyant style, smashing 117 off 128 balls, as he shared two hundred partnerships with Hamish Kingston (31) and Karl Brown (81).
Brown and Kingston tortured the visitors by constantly finding gaps in the field and making boundaries at the Beech Walk ground.
An impressive top order performance, finished off by Matthew McKiernan (33) allowed the skipper to confidently declare on 284 for 3 after 45 overs – Matthew Hibbert the only other batsman to feature briefly.
An accurate opening spell from the Tasmanian quickie Kingston (5 for 38) had New Brighton teetering on the edge of a collapse, but a resolute middle order temporarily stemmed the flow of wickets falling.
The only batman to show any serious application was David While (59) as the visitors fell victim to the spin of McKiernan (3 for 23) and the clinical bowling of Richard Dempster (2 for 28).
Leigh’s attack proved far too strong for mid-table New Brighton, who were blown away to finish 130 all out. A confident Leigh side travel to Lytham next Saturday on the back of a convincing win.
