Collieries are on the spot to seal Cup slot
11:00am Friday 23rd August 2013 in Sport
ATHERTON Collieries booked an FA Cup preliminary round spot with 3-1 victory over North West Counties League Premier Division outfit Alsager Town on Saturday.
Brad Cooke and Paul Atherton gave the hosts the lead and Gareth Peet’s late effort put an end to Alsager’s brief fightback.
Peet was brought down in the box after 32 minutes to give Colls their seventh penalty in five games.
Prescott’s initial effort was saved, but skipper Cooke reacted quickest to tap home.
Colls extended their lead moments after the interval, Prescott winning a header at the far post allowing Atherton to bundle in from a yard.
Town pulled a goal back with quarter of an hour remaining, but Peet broke away to finsih with the last kick of the game and book Colls a date with Radcliffe Borough in the next round.
Weekend FA Cup action meant Colls hosted Nelson the previous Monday in a top-of-the-table North West Counties League Division One clash.
Nelson dominated first half proceedings at Alder House and Colls were fortunate to go in only one goal down at the break.
A fine goalline clearance from Rob Swanton and heroic keeping from Joe Brobbin restricted the in-form visitors.
Colls improved after the interval and Mark Truffas levelled after the Nelson stopper spilt a weak effort.
Truffas rattled a post ten minutes later, but Atherton was on hand to bury the rebound and seal the win.
Colls hosts newboys Hanley Town on Saturday and Ashton Town on Bank Holiday Monday.
