A TYLDESLEY teenager produced the decisive ride as Leicester Monarchs were crowned cycling speedway’s British Women’s Club Champions for the eighth year in a row.

Laura Watson, aged 18, who has competed with the team for two years, achieved a race win in Hull to clinch the title with several heats still remaining.

Watson, who trains at Bury as well as at Leicester, has had her confidence and ability boosted after reaching and finishing fifth in the recent British Individual Championships.

Meanwhile, a mixed Astley and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club side lined up for the sixth and final round of the Northern Fours League at Bury on Sunday.

Reece Pollitt led the scoring for A&T, winning three of his five races.

A&T finished fifth of six on the day, as Stockport made a clean sweep, winning all six rounds of the series to take the title. A&T finished in fourth place.

At the same event, St Ambrose Barlow Primary School pupil Thomas Whitwam, who is from Astley but competes for Bury, won all four races in his age group to be crowned Northern League under 10s champion.

A&T and Bury started as joint leaders on match points in the final round of the Northern Junior League series.

Ben Dickinson rode well to score 13 points in the under 10s match, ably backed by Joe Quarmby and Emily Burgess with 11 apiece.

Elsewhere, A&T suffered a blow when Max Evans withdrew after being put into the fence in his second ride – he won his opening race.

Ciaran Collins won two races to score 14 while Pollitt won his opening three races to score 15 in the under 16s, also securing overall victory in the under16s Grand Prix individual series.

Mark Graham scored 13 in the combination match, backed up by Roy Heslop on 12.
