ATHERTON Collieries continued their early season bid for promotion with a convincing win at Widnes Vikings on Saturday.
A fifth straight victory for Colls keeps them top of the North West Counties League Division One.
Gareth Peet opened the scoring ahead of a Kevin Towey strike and Paul Atherton double after Vikings had found an equaliser.
Peet’s 10th of the campaign broke the deadlock inside 90 seconds for Steve Pilling’s men, but the hosts were level seven minutes later.
Vikings were looking more likely to score, but it was a deflected effort from debutant Towey that looped over the keeper to give Colls a half-time lead.
Atherton collected his first nine minutes after the break, reacting quickest to follow up when his initial shot was saved.
His second with 10 minutes to go put the result beyond doubt, although keeper Joe Brobbin was forced to make a save late on.
