Thomas is runner-up in national youth speedway finals

A ST Ambrose Barlow schoolboy clinched second place in the British Youth National Cycle Speedway Finals at Astley and Tyldesley on Saturday.
Thomas Whitwam finished runner-up behind the current British champion in a 30-strong field of the UK’s most talented under 10s riders.
The nine-year-old raced to a podium finish in every stage to keep him firmly in contention for the final round.
Whitwam raced unbeaten in the heats on Saturday at the Gin Pit to scoop four straight wins and cruise into the A final for the third consecutive time.
He came blasting out of the gates and held off the third and fourth ranked riders to finish in second spot in the under 10s competition.
An initial 68 riders contested the regional qualifying rounds, with four stages held in each region of the UK.
Whitwam finished first in the northern regional qualifiers, taking 95 points through to the national rounds.
