ATHERTON Collieries extended their unbeaten run to seven games in the North West Counties League First Division with a home win against Chadderton.
Strikes from Kevin Towey, Chris Lawton and Gareth Peet, before a Chris Pauley reply, briefly sent Colls top of the table.
The visitors started brightly, pinning Atherton in their own half early on, but 23 minutes in Mark Truffas floated a corner kick onto the head of Towey to open the scoring.
The goalscorer’s near post finish beat Chadderton keeper Dale Latham for his second goal in as many matches.
Towey almost doubled Colls’ lead minutes later when he found himself through on goal, only to be denied by a fine save from Latham and Charlie Stoker was unable to convert the rebound.
However, Colls did double their advantage on 32 minutes when Lawton latched onto a loose ball in the area to smash home on his second goal of the season on the half volley.
Chadderton threatened to reply three minutes later with their first serious attempt on goal, but Joe Brobbin rushed from his line to deflect Niall Sultan’s effort wide of the post.
Chadderton pressed forward after the interval, but an Atherton break resulted in Peet skipping past two defenders and the visitors’ goalkeeper to make it three.
Skipper Pauley pulled one back on 65 minutes when his cross caught Brobbin off-guard and the stopper could only help the ball into his own net.
Saturday’s home League Cup tie was postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Nina Pilling, wife of Colls’ manager Steve earlier in the week.
The club would like to thank the NWCFL and Cheadle Town for the instant agreement to the cancellation.
Steve and the club have been humbled by the amount of messages of support received from the footballing family.
