Leigh Centurions' Bob Beswick wants World Cup experience with Ireland to improve him further
THE Rugby League World Cup starts on Saturday and despite being selected in the Ireland squad, Leigh Centurions star Bob Beswick feels there is more improvement left in him.
The 28-year-old, who has now completed two seasons at Leigh Sports Village, has targeted further work to bring him on as a player.
“It’s been an enjoyable year,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed getting stuck in with the lads. We’ve all helped each other out and we’ve won the Northern Rail Cup, which was brilliant, and we might be the last team to win it.
“It’s a year that I’m satisfied with, but not happy with. I think I’ll get a lot better next year.
“I’m always looking to get better. I want to continue improving over the rest of my career. I don’t see any reason not to.
“I will keep myself fit and keep training, working hard and listening to what Paul Rowley and Neil Jukes (coaches) have to say.”
Named by Mark Aston in the Ireland squad alongside club teammates Stuart Littler and Simon Finnigan, Beswick has now raised his sights further.
“Getting selected for the World Cup squad is massive. Being in the squad is fantastic but I want to get in that team now. There is no end to it, it’s just continuing.
We want to win our first game and then the next. We’ve trained well and looked sharp.
“Preparation is as good as it’s been. We don’t have the luxury of spending X amount of money, but I don’t think that makes a team.
“As long as you’ve got hard working and honest staff, teammates and everyone around you, we can achieve something pretty special.
“I think that’s what we’ve done at Leigh.
“We dug in and got the job done, which is pretty much what we are hoping to do with Ireland.”
Beswick is looking forward to the first challenge for Ireland and is hoping to earn selection to the team to take on Fiji in Rochdale next Monday, kick off 8pm.
