LEIGH Amateur Boxing Club’s England international Matty Burgess produced another all-action performance on Sunday in the NACYP Championships at Liverpool.
He defeated Merseyside champion Rhys Jameson, of Everton Red Triangle, at Walton Sports Centre.
The 16-year-old made a slow start by his standards, but recovered to dominate the second and third rounds against a well-schooled opponent.
There were mixed results for Team Leigh’s representatives in Morecambe on Saturday, where there were good performances by 11-year-old Callum Follows, Shaun Michael Varey and Jimboy Price.
The highlight was a unanimous points’ win for middleweight Jordan Nicklin.
Debutant female featherweight Sam Houghton, light middleweight Tony Boardman, welterweight first-timer Serwan Rassai and Jordan Lewis all suffered defeats but continue to improve.
Team Leigh’s Josh Waterworth, 13, and 15-year-old Sean Connor both lost out after close contests during the Rotunda ABC show in Liverpool on Saturday. The former boxes again tomorrow, Friday, in Burnley.
