EIGHTY children from 10 primary schools across the area took part in the first Atherton and Tyldesley Sports Association swimming gala at the Pelican Centre in Tyldesley.

Pupils from St George's Central, Sacred Heart, St Philip's, St Michael's, Garrett Hall, Chowbent, St. Richard's, Tyldesley Primary, St Ambrose Barlow and Hindsford all took part in a variety of individual and team races, cheered on by more than 150 supporters.

Going into the final team race, the competition was close with several schools still in with a chance of taking the title.

However, once all the scores were added up it was the team from St Philip's who were crowned gala champions.

Liz Johnson, from Wigan and Leigh Housing, was on hand to present the school with their trophy, medals and certificates.

She has been instrumental in securing more than £3,000 for swimming lessons at the Pelican Centre via the Better Neighbourhood Fund.

Natalia Stothard and her Pelican Centre staff not only helped to organise this event but providing expert support during the afternoon event. Volunteers from Fred Longworth High School and Tyldesley Swimming Club played an important role too in ensuring the success that it was. The supporters created a superb atmosphere which helped to motivate the children to do their best for their teams.
