Cycle speedway club celebrates successful season

ASTLEY and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club members celebrated a successful 2013 season at the annual presentation and social afternoon.

The function room at the Astley and Tyldesley Miners’ Welfare Club was packed as close to 100 club members, families and friends attended. Forty-five rider awards were presented, along with 22 volunteer awards.

In addition to the trophies won in direct competition on the track, the club’s five annual awards were made. The Northern Under 10s Individual Champion, Matthew Snell, was awarded the J. Fisher & Sons Young Rider of the Year Trophy on his 10th birthday to make it a very special day for him.

The Rory Blackwell Cup for best newcomer was presented to Joe Quarmby, who has really taken to the sport after starting in mid-season.

Alex Semtyshin was the winner of the North West Trophies Cup for best novice as recognition for the progress she has made over the past 15 months.

John White received the Most Improved Rider of the Year Cup.

The final award of the day was the coveted Ron Hack Memorial Cup for the club's volunteer of the year.

This year’s winner is Joanne Whitelegg, the club’s welfare officer, who has ensured the wellbeing of club members throughout 2013 as well as carrying out sterling work at the club's weekly club nights and on match days.
