Leigh RUFC 15 Birkenhead Park RUFC 21

LEIGH entertained Birkenhead in what proved to be a highly competitive game against a title-seeking outfit.

Leigh had lost heavily in the away fixture, but were in no mood for a repeat performance.

They dominated the early exchanges and were rewarded when skipper Iain Wood scored from an impressive catch and drive.

That was quickly followed by a charge down by Alex Middleton-Adams who scored with ease. Elliott Ryan converted to give Leigh a 12-point lead.

Birkenhead came more into the game as the interval approached.

Leigh were forced into desperate defence but only conceded when hard-working forward David Penn was sent to the bin.

Birkenhead were to dominate the early part of the second half and scored two more converted tries to take control.

Leigh battled their way back into the game but a Ryan penalty was to be their only reward, plus the losing bonus point.

It was a strong performance by Leigh against a strong club with more financial clout, and perceived wisdom remains that the side are in good shape for the late season battles.
