A TEENAGE wrestler from Lowton has her eyes on competing in the Commonwealth Games this summer.

Sophie Edwards, also a rising talent in judo, has come a long way in a short time.

The 17-year-old became wrestling’s British Junior Champion in the 76kilos weight group in Northern Ireland last October.

She now needs to impress in the English Senior Championships at North Solihull Sports Centre in Birmingham next month and then the British Senior Championships to remain in the hunt for a place in the England team in freestyle wrestling in Glasgow, host city to the Games between July 23 and August 3.

The former Golborne High School pupil has gained a call into the Great Britain Talent squad.

She can claim to be the first on the books at the Y Club, Manchester, to have acquired scholarships in both wrestling and judo.

Edwards is gaining expert tuition from three-times wrestling Olympian Fitz Lloyd Walker and two-times judo Olympian Nigel Donohoe, who is the British Judo Association’s performance director.

In judo, she is on the England Talent squad has been selected for the national team four times.

She was British champion judo player at the age of 16. Edwards now has 15 national medals since starting out five years ago.

She is looking for sponsorship to help towards her dream of becoming an Olympic champion.
