LEIGH Boxing Club welterweight Matty Burgess continued his winning run in the National Youth ABA Championships with victory in the pre-quarter finals against East Midlands Champion Bradie Perkins of Earl Shilton ABC.

The Leigh boxer was on the front foot from the first bell throwing body shots and hooks at the mobile Perkins.

Taking a clear first-round lead, Burgess stepped up the pressure in the second but the Earl Shilton boxer, to his credit, fired back with heavy right hands.

Towards the end of the second Burges caught Perkins with two massive left hooks to confirm his lead.

The third round saw Burgess tear across the ring with a swarm of heavy combinations.

At the final bell Burgess’ incessant work rate and cleaner shots saw him progress to the national quarter finals.

Leigh ABC introduced another youngster to the boxing scene on Saturday afternoon with 17-year-old middleweight Henry Price making his debut on the Birkenhead Venture ABC show in Liverpool.

Price boxed well despite losing a close split decision.
