Leigh Athletic Res 5 AFC Monton Res 2

LEIGH returned to winning ways in Manchester Football League Division Three.

After gifting Monton a penalty inside the first 10 seconds, Athletic started to get a foothold in the game and were rewarded with a two-goal salvo during a dominant 20- minute spell.

First Tim Lewis thundered in off the post, then Sim added the second with a deft floating shot.

Leigh shot themselves in the foot to gift the opposition an equaliser but Daniel Babilinski’s 25-yard free kick restored the lead before half time.

Athletic started the second half well, closing out Monton at every opportunity but were indebted to Michael Barker whose fingertip save onto the post kept Leigh focused, and a goal to the good.

Two late strikes from Tim Rogers and Daniel Petrie, the latter the pick of five excellent goals, sealed the points with 10 minutes to go.

If they could find their consistency, they would be a match for anyone in the league, but the signs are good that the team is progressing along nicely.
