CYCLE speedway’s 2014 challenge starts for Tyldesley’s Laura Watson this weekend when a trip to Newport will see her compete in the Welsh Women’s Individuals.

Since her return from Australia in November, Watson, who became the first women’s world champion in 2011 aged 16, has been training in Sheffield after being invited to join the Stars when they heard the Monarchs rider had been struggling to get to training with her Leicester club.

Watson, aged 19, is hoping for another successful year after being a part of the Leicester team that won their eighth title in the women’s club championships.

Her race win gave them the top podium place, while she was also selected to race for Great Britain Lions and subsequent triumph in the Ashes series Down Under.
