LEIGH Boxing Club enjoyed a productive Saturday in the National Schoolboy Championships North West region title.
Wins for Shaun Michael Varey, Josh Waterworth, Coan Gildart and Kian Flanagan in Walkden see them join teammates and North West region champions Callum Ryder, Paddy Hewitt and Isaac McDonagh, making it a record seven Team Leigh boxers in the National quarter finals in two weeks’ time.
Flanagan, 11, got things under way in the 34kg minors’ final, taking a unanimous points’ win over Callum Bailey of Chorley-based Jennings Gym.
Immediately after this 11-year-old Gildart entered the ring in the 35.5kg minors’ final, taking on Tyler Jones of Salford-based Oliver’s Gym, and out-boxed and out-punched his opponent for a unanimous points’ victory.
Next, 13-year-old Waterworth took on Tyler Wilson of Whitehaven in the Class A 43kg final.
The Leigh boxer’s boxing and moving made his opponent constantly miss, countering him and scoring clean shots for another unanimous points’ win.
With six team mates through to the National quarters, 14-year-old Shaun Michael Varey tore into his opponent, Sean Strong of Bredbury, for a unanimous points’ win.
All seven now box in the National quarter finals in Liverpool against Merseyside and Cheshire region on Sunday, March 23.
TEAM Leigh boxers Joe Shinton and Jordan Nicklin both recorded impressive victories at the Kirkham show in Blackpool on Friday.
Shinton, 15, a light-flyweight gave opponent Thomas Lowe two standing counts before ending proceedings in the second round.
Nineteen-year-old middleweight Nicklin took a hard-earned points’ victory over 30-year-old Carl Owen of Wigton ABC.
