A LEIGH Harriers athlete shot to the top of the UK rankings on Sunday.

In his first 1500m race this season, undr 13s runner Ben McLaughlin won gold at the Trafford Open Medal Meeting in a record time of 4:52.5, slicing 14 seconds off his previous best.

Ben has been catching the eye on the track for some time; under 13s club record holder for 600m indoors, he also ranked second in the North West at 800m.

“Ben has worked hard over the winter,” said coach Margaret Galvin. “He’s hoping to do well on the track this season in his favourite events 800m and 1500m.”

Shea Mellor also came third in Ben McLaughlin’s race with a personal best and threw his furthest distance in the javelin.

Billy Blain won gold in the 200m with another personal best, ranking him second in the North West, while Kristian Wade, Coel Mellor and Faye Bayman all scooped silver medals in respective events.
