Leigh Miners Rangers 38 Hunslet Warriors 14

ON a day when they mourned the death of club great Bob Dowling, Leigh Miners Rangers turned in an accomplished display as two teams featuring plenty of changes served up a cracking game at Twist Lane.

Warriors pounded the Miners line for long spells only to find the home defence in irresistible form.

Miners, by contrast, had a blitz of four tries either side of the interval which took the game away from the visitors.

Leigh’s tries came from Shaun Dowie, three, Scott O’Brien, two, Lee Gittens, Jake Waterworth and Jack Probert.

l BOB Dowling was a member of the most successful Miners team to date, dominating the North West Counties League and winning several national cups.

On retiring as a player he remained a committed member of both the rugby and welfare management teams at the club.

He was a founder member of the Miners Hall of Fame in 2011.
