EAST were unable to gain their first win of the season due to ill discipline and a number of penalties being turned into points.

There were plenty of positives, led by Mark Ballard and Zac Nicholls East played some quality rugby.

Tries for East came from Ballard, Mike Fearnay, Lee Gaskell and Marcus Mercer with Nicholls converting three.

East raced into a 22-10 half time lead after tries from Danny Surridge, Corey Hamer, Brad Whelan and James Fleming, Whelan adding three conversions.

Ethan Fleming scored in the second half, Whelan converted.

A MUCH-IMPROVED performance saw East take an early lead with an unconverted try from Will Ludlow.

Newton hit back to lead at the break, but East replied with a try from Ryan Horne converted by Danny Hatton.

Lewis Clarke touched down and Horne converted to tie the game at 16-16 with five minutes left, but Newton scored a late winning try.

EAST’S Callum Hughes scored a brilliant solo try, regathering a last tackle chip over to score between the posts and convert.

Excellent defensive work from Callum Thorpe and strong runs from the forward pack gave East a foothold.

Taylor Pemberton intercepted to sprint home, before Jordan Fishwick went over and Ben Molyneaux grabbed the final try.

JOSH Hopkins grabbed East’s only try, Cai O'Brien earned man-of-the-match with his leadership skills, Romy Bell gained best run and Ryan Kelleher won the best tackle.
