AN amateur boxer from Leigh is enjoying his best season in the sport after returning from a three-year absence.

Declan West represents the Astley VIP Boxing Club, based on Chaddock Lane, and returned to the sport last November following a lengthy break.

In his first contest he lost a narrow points’ decision but since then has gone unbeaten in eight contests, including some devastating performances against experienced opponents.

Club coach Damian Jones said: "Declan has been a revelation since he returned to boxing.

“Some of his recent performances have been outstanding but it’s not just the manner of his wins that stands out – it’s the fact that he is doing it against some very experienced and talented opponents and he is winning the contests clearly.”

West’s winning run includes three wins in the last three weeks, with the highlight being a clear points’ victory over Bolton's Wes Burns, who boasted a record of 21 wins from 26 contests going into the contest.
