ATHERTON Colls completed their North West Counties League Premier Division in fifth place as Formby claimed victory to gain promotion.

Formby took the lead with through an own goal on the hour mark. A corner was whipped in and flew in off centre half Chris Lawton.

Colls’ Aaron Cringle rose highest from a corner only to see his bullet header hit the inside of the far post and bounce clear.

Colls then nearly grabbed an injury time leveller, with only a wonder save from the Formby keeper stopping Daryl Patton scoring from distance.

A bumper crowd of 251 turned out at Alder House to witness a goalless local derby on Bank Holiday Monday.

Six minutes into the game and it was the visitors who registered the first shot on goal.

LR’s Ben Hardcastle volleying from the edge of the area for Colls’ keeper and ex-LR manager Phil Priestley to easily gather.

Keith Wedge sent in a cross that bounced off the LR crossbar and on the half hour mark Mitch Leece fired wide.

Charlie Stoker’s skilful run created Colls’ best chance in the dying minutes, but Matt Grimshaw could not convert.
