PARENTS and staff from St George’s Central, Tyldesley, and Atherton St George’s CE Primary School met in the inaugural football match between the two.

The team from Tyldesley drew their first game 2-2 against the staff from Fred Longworth last month and travelled to Atherton hoping to claim their first victory.

The visitors hit the post in the first minute, but a penalty and a second goal narrowly before half time saw the Atherton school take a 2-0 half time lead.

Half time changes for St. George's Central saw them again make a positive start to the second half, but they could not convert their chances.

Atherton St. George's added two more towards the end of the half before the Tyldesley outfit managed to pull one back, but it was merely a consolation as the Atherton school claimed a 4-1 win.

St George’s Central headteacher Mr Grogan said: “Thanks to all the spectators who turned up to support both schools, especially the children from the Atherton School who produced a programme for the match and helped as assistant referees.

“I would also like to thank Mrs Coulthard and her staff for the hospitality we received during our time at the school, especially Mr Holland and Mr Howlett who were instrumental in helping to set up this match.”

Any schools wishing for a game can contact St. George's Central and Atherton St. George's.

“Atherton that have taken a 1 - 0 lead in the dual between the two St. George's,” added Mr Grogan. “It is hoped a netball match between the staff/parents from both schools can be arranged in the coming weeks.”
