A PAIR of Armed Forces veterans bagged the Wigan and District Amateur League player of the year trophies.

Secretary and player manager at Leigh Foundry FC, 34-year-old John Pilkington took the Division One crown, while old friend Scot Heapy, 31, of Leigh Rangers took the Premiership title.

Both served with the First Battalion Queens Lancashire Regiment on operational tours overseas.

Pilkington said: “I thoroughly believe that Scot fully deserves the highest merit and commendation on his efforts over the many years to the game.

“Scot is a popular figure in football in Leigh and I wouldn`t be the first to show gratitude to my old footballing and Forces buddy.

“During our time we successfully represented at the highest level in football the military could offer, a mixture of Army, Navy and RAF, the Combined Services.”

The pair will be presented with their achievements on Friday, May 30 at Norley Hall Cricket Club.
