KURT Haggerty has signed an extended contract to stay with Leigh Centurions until the end of the 2016 season.

Haggerty, 25, is currently on a season long loan from Barrow Raiders and has signed a full-time two-year contract that commences on 1 December 2014.

The son of former St Helens international forward Roy, he has been in fine form during Leigh’s record-breaking start to the season, playing a big part in the run of 15 successive wins.

Born in St Helens, Haggerty began his career with his hometown club in their Academy ranks and had a brief loan spell with Carcassonne.

He made 10 senior appearances with Leigh in the 2009 season and later played for Blackpool Panthers before becoming a regular in the Widnes side.

He enjoyed an outstanding season for Barrow in 2013, scoring nine tries and kicking 58 goals in 26 appearances and represented Ireland in the World Cup. He also coaches Pilkington Recs in the National Conference League.

Leigh Centurions Head Coach Paul Rowley said: “I am delighted to have secured Kurt’s services for another two years as a fully fledged Leigh player.

"He is a high calibre second row forward with a great skill set and attitude and he fits the style of play we aspire towards. On top of that he’s a great lad and fits comfortably into our environment. He’s a great acquisition.”
