NEW boss Michael Clegg began his reign at Atherton Collieries with a pre-season win against Runcorn Town at Orford Jubille Park in Warrington.

Gaz Carson’s second-half header was enough to see off Town, who finished fifth in the North West Counties League Premier Division last season.

Colls used 18 players in the fixture, with Dylan Maloney – who was with Evo-Stik Premier side Droylsden last season – impressing in the middle alongside Andy Heald and Carson looking solid in defence.

The second half saw the introduction of Ben Hardcastle, Jordan Cover and retained midfielder from last season Jake Patton.

The deadlock was broken minutes into the second half when Patton floated a corner into Carson, who headed in from close range.

Shortly after, a well-worked move saw Tom Shaw send a cross in for Cover, who was unable steer his header past the Runcorn goalkeeper.
