Aldwinians 0 Leigh 42

LEIGH enjoyed a comfortable Lancashire Trophy first round win at Aldwinians.

Despite playing against post-to-post strong wind Leigh took the initiative and scored an early try when Matt Newton crashed over, following good work by winger Dyson.

Elliott Ryan converted to put Leigh seven points up.

Aldwinians, using the wind to their advantage, kept Leigh pinned down in their own 22 for a sustained period of pressure.

Leigh, however, defended with some tenacious tackling which kept the home side at bay.

A foray into Aldwinians' 22 resulted in a fracas which saw David Penn yellow carded.

Leigh then set about the home side with the forwards completely dominant.

After numerous attempts to cross the line the outstanding number eight, Robinson, scored Leigh’s second try which was converted by Ryan.

Aldwinians' scrum half got on the wrong side of the referee which earned him a red card, this was quickly followed by Matt Newton taking an early bath.

Turning round at half time with the wind to their advantage Leigh stand-off Drake kicked the ball in front of his forwards to exert strong pressure on the home defence.

Tries had to come as the fitter Leigh outfit crossed the line with Duffy, D Crompton, Shepherd and Wood adding to the score, all of which were converted by Rob Drake.

Outstanding players for Leigh were Robinson and Drake with Dom Yarwood showing great promise on his debut.

The fitness levels and enthusiasm shown by the Leigh outfit augers well for the forthcoming season.
