NEW Centurions signing Greg Worthington is ready to prove why he deserves to be playing full time rugby next season.

The centre spent four years with Featherstone Rovers before agreeing to join Leigh on a two-year full time deal from November.

Worthington, who has family from Wigan and Leigh, originally hails from Bradford and played for Queensbury as an amateur before turning professional with Huddersfield.

He said: “It’s quite a big move for myself. I’ve spent four years at Featherstone and settled in pretty well there, but as a bloke and as a player I wanted to push myself as far as I can go and they couldn’t offer me full time rugby.

"I’ve seen what Leigh as a club have done this year and when I found out that they were going full time it seemed a good place to come.

“I hear the right things from people I know that have been associated with this club. My first impressions are very good and I am really looking forward to getting started and getting stuck in to pre-season to challenge for a shirt.

“I developed as a player and a bloke at Featherstone but it’s time to take that next step. I’ve done part-time rugby since I was 16 pretty much and worked but this year I’ve had a job in the community department at Featherstone, which was a nice step up from working.

"Now the next step is fulltime rugby and showing these what I’ve got in pre-season. It’s a new set of blokes, it’s a fresh start; I’m the new guy now!”

Worthington will add competition in the centres to the likes of Tom Armstrong, Michael Platt and Cameron Pitman.

And he is someone Leigh head coach Paul Rowley has long admired Worthing from afar.

“Greg has been on my radar for a good 12 months," said Rowley. "I do believe centre is a specialist position and there is a rarity of them in this country.

"We are blessed in the fact that we’ve two or three good ones at our club already. I’m absolutely made up to add Greg to it.

"It was a one off; it was me going back after getting an initial no from Featherstone and suddenly the door opened and they were happy to do business and let Greg realise his potential.

“I chatted to Greg and we shared the same ambition; in fact we are all ambitious. Greg shares the ambition of the club and the rest of the squad. He is another good addition to an already strong squad.”

One player that will not be joining Leigh is Hull FC's Australian half-back Jacob Miller. Miller spent time on dual contract with Doncaster this year and Leigh pursued the former Sydney Rooster and Wests Tigers player.

“We had a deal arranged with Hull for Jacob but he has decided to go home," Leigh head of rugby Derek Beaumont explained.

Centurions are still in the market for a half back and continue their search.
