FOLLOWING a 17-year wait, Tyldesley junior swim lifted the Central Lancs Junior Jubilee Shield in Bury this weekend.

Tyldesley had competed against 14 other swimming clubs during the year and qualified for the Grand Final at the Bury pool.

In the final, they came up against Bury and Elton, Crompton Classics and Stalybridge, but amid a great atmosphere the Tyldesley swimmers produced their best performances of the year.

Final result Tyldesley119, Crompton 108, Bury and Elton 105 and Stalybridge 89 The club was in also in water polo action this weekend, with Tyldesley under 12s finishing runners up in the Cheshire County tournament.

Tyldesley had held Stretford to a 2-2 draw in the final, but lost on penalties. The under 14s went down 16-11 to Royton, while the under 16s shared 10 goals each in a draw with the same club.

The men's senior team were beaten 12-11 at Stretford after letting a five-goal lead slip.

Tyldesley started the first quarter in impressive form and went in three goals up thanks to Lucas McNulty, Dennis Price and a hat trick from Jonathan Stafford after two Stretford replies.

Tyldesley then increased their lead to five with another McNulty goal and one for Rob Bone at the half-way stage.

However, Stretford outscored them in the third quarter, despite McNulty and Addison Brown being on target, but Tyldesley entered the last quarter holding a 9-6 lead.

Stretford attacked Tyldesley strongly in the final quarter and after Peter Harrison's goal for the visitors, drew level at 10 apiece with four minutes left.

The Manchester side continued to attack and scored twice more to take the lead, while Tyldesley could only manage to pull one back through McNulty with a minute to play as Stretford saw out an exciting fixture to clinch the win.
