JOSH Waterworth saw off a Scottish Schoolboy Champion to clinch the boxer of the night crown at Team Leigh’s opening show of the season.

Lowton High School student Waterworth enjoyed a unanimous points win over Kilmarnock-based North West Boxing Club’s Harys Lowe in front of a sell-out crowd at Lowton Civic Hall.

It earned the 14-year-old National Schoolboy finalist the Simpson Heald Pearson Boxer of the Night award.

Kyle Parr also took a unanimous points win when he out-gunned Frankie Partington of Oliver Harrisons Gym.

Eleven-year-old Wes Holding was making his Team Leigh debut against Rochdale’s Hamer Boxing Club member Adam Earnshaw.

Despite losing the first round, the debutant levelled the scores after the second round and rained punches in the final round to outscore his opponent with some classy hooks and uppercuts.

Experienced boxer Adam Ridge, 54 bouts, was next into the ring, but the light welterweight slipped to a split decision loss to former Scottish champion Kieran McMaster.

Team Leigh's second debutant, 11-year-old Will Hewitt, was next into action facing Marcus Whitman of Sedburgh Boxing Club.

Both youngsters gave their all in a tremendous display of heart and endeavour, the judges awarding the Leigh man a split decision win, with Hewitt taking the JNC Construction Secretary’s Shield.

National Schoolboy finalist Coan Gildart controlled his bout against David McCallum with the 11-year-old taking a unanimous points victory.

There was also power-packed debut by Team Leigh's 14-year-old welterweight David Edwards, who blasted out his far more experienced opponent with a first round TKO to take the Team Leigh Boxer of the Night Award.

Eleven-year old Paddy Hewitt could not overcome Niall McIntosh, but 15-year-old Lewis Ryder continued his good form by outpunching and outscoring giant opponent Lacelles Henry of Gorton.

Team Leigh teenager Harry Winnard, aged 14, produced the performance of the evening beating Samuel Lloyd of Fleetwood to claim the Tommy Sargeant Boxer of the Night Award.

Elsewhere, there were wins from Josh Taylor, Jason Weir and Matty Walsh, but defeats for Joe Shinton and international light middleweight Matty Burgess.
