LEIGH Genesis FC was named as the Club of the Year at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards on Friday.

Genesis were honoured with the same title at the Wigan Sports Awards and as a result went on to represent the borough at the Lancashire Cricket Club ceremony in Trafford.

The club competed against nine other winners from the boroughs that make up Greater Manchester and took the prestigious award in front of an audience of more than 500 fellow competitors, sports personalities and politicians.

Janet Smith, Nick Boardman and Rob Atherton were invited to the stage to talk about the club and to receive the award.

Rob, Leigh Genesis secretary, said: “This award is the pinnacle of our achievements to date.

“Not only do we run a very large number of teams but we have engaged with the community.

“We wish to thank our officials, managers, coaches, parents and players for their hard work, their support and their loyalty.”
