LEIGH Centurions racked up another 96 points and conceded just 12 in back to back wins over the Easter weekend.

But despite stretching the club's record unbeaten run to 19 matches with wins against Hunslet and Workington, head coach Paul Rowley sees room for improvement ahead of Sunday's trip to face title contenders Sheffield Eagles.

This weekend's opponents are just two points behind leaders Leigh in the Kingstone Press Championship table.

"We're averaging over 50 points a game in our last six games and conceding an average of six a game," said Rowley.

"Against Workington we scored some good tries; the frustrating thing is that we probably bombed eight.

"But if we are stood here slightly frustrated and have won by 50 points, then it just shows how far we've come over the years.

"Defensively we were definitely ferocious at times but were quite loose at others, which gives us some work to do before out match against Sheffield, who are a good side.

"They are always a good side, but this year they are really strong competitors for that top four position.

"So it will be a really tough game, but it's one that we are looking forward too and one that I'm sure everyone will enjoy."

Centurions will have to do battle with the division's third-placed side without star prop Fuifui Moimoi, who was forced off with a knee injury after 13 minutes against Workington on Monday.

But Gareth Hock proved an able replacement, the summer signing making an instant impact with two tries on his long-awaited debut.

"It's always a tough ask is our middle unit here, we ask a lot of them because they have a specific role," he said.

"It's a continuous one and any new player coming to this club struggles with it at first, there’s a lot of educating and it takes a lot of energy.

"Gaz was low on energy having not played for quite a while, but we got some minutes in to him.

"I'd say he was probably at about 70 per cent of where he can be, but that bodes well for the future and he certainly showed that anywhere within 10 metres, he's difficult to stop and is a strong boy.

"He got some quality offloads away on the front foot.

"It was a positive debut and it was good to see him well appreciated by the supporters."

Hock could be given his first Centurions start at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster, where Sheffield play their home games.

But while Rowley ruled out any chance of a quick return from Moimoi, he is hopeful that the former NRL star will be out long term.

"He definitely won't play," said the coach. "He's due in for a scan and we'll assess from there, but hopefully he's only out for a week or two."

While Hock was making his debut for Centurions, a handful of other Leigh players were passing other career landmarks at the weekend.

Gregg McNally and Bob Beswick both notched up their 100th appearances for the club, while Martyn Ridyard became only the fourth Leigh player to kick 500 goals.

"Martyn has joined some illustrious company," added Rowley. "Hopefully he'll continue to clock them up and get into third position." added Rowley.

Leigh's match against Sheffield at the Keepmoat on Sunday kicks off at 4.15pm.

Meanwhile, the Centurions reserves will finally get their season underway tonight, kick off 7.30pm, with Paul Anderson's side travelling to Keighley.

Anderson will be without Ben Reynolds after the versatile player, who has featured at stand-off and full-back for Leigh, joined Doncaster on a month's loan.
