LEIGH captain Matt McKiernan hopes to continue the club’s good recent record in the Ray Digman Trophy at Division One leaders Colwyn Bay on Sunday.

McKiernan’s side have made three out of the last four finals, winning the Liverpool Competition’s league cup in 2012 and finishing runners-up last year and in 2011.

The players will have the added incentive of playing the semi-final on Colwyn Bay’s county ground.

But despite facing Division One opposition, the skipper is not expecting an easy ride.

“Lancashire’s recent game there was a high-scoring affair so I think the players will enjoy the day out,” he said.

“Colwyn Bay is renowned as a really good batting track so I think it will be good for us, but they are no mugs. They are the runaway leaders of Division One so we know we will have to play well to get past them.

“We are determined to get to the final again. I think we have shown by our recent record how highly we regard this competition.

“We always look to do well in all of the cups, including the Lancashire Knockout and National Knockout, but the League Cup is the one everyone wants to win at the start of the season.”

Before Sunday’s trip to North Wales, Leigh host second-placed Ormskirk in the Premier Division.

With six games of the season remaining, they still have a bit of work to do to dispel relegation fears, although last weekend’s 29-run victory over close rivals Rainhill moved them up to eighth place, 23 points above the drop zone.

Opener Ross Zelem continued his fine form, hitting 78 runs as Leigh declared on 165-9 from 55 overs.

McKiernan took 3-25 and Ryan Housley weighed in with 3-39 as they dismissed seventh-placed Rainhill for 136 inside 48 overs.
