ASTLEY and Tyldesley's hopes of winning this year's Northern League Division One title ended with a shock 94-80 defeat at bottom of the table Hull on Sunday.

Despite an excellent unbeaten performance from former European champion Damian Zareba and strong back up from Radek Handle, Reece Pollitt and Paul Graham, A&T were beaten.

It was a similar story in the Division Two match, as an understrength A&T lost 91-74, despite excellent performances from Mark Grantham, Ciaran Collins and John White.

Special credit goes to second team captain Collins, who turned out with a broken hand. In the Division Three match, A&T lost their first match of the season, as they were hammered 83-22, with good performances from John White and Lucy Grantham.

Astley & Tyldesley also fielded a team in the Veterans British Club Championships at Hull on Saturday.

A&T just missed out on qualifying for the final, finishing third out of five teams in their semi-final match.

Their youngsters dominated the Manchester League u-10 Individual finals at Bury on Wednesday.

The riders took the top five places, as they did in the Grand Prix series.

Defending champion Joe Quarmby and John White both won their opening four races, before meeting in the decisive last race.

They were joined by Jack Murray, who had dropped just one point to Charlie Burgess in his opening ride.

John made the most of his grid one to race away and complete his maximum to take the title, with Joe gating round Jack from grid four, to finish second in the race and overall.

Jack's third place meant that he finished with 17 points, one point behind Charlie, who finished in third place overall.

Jack Littler rode well for his 16 points, taking fifth place overall, with Lucy Grantham scoring a creditable 11 points.
