LEIGH crashed out of the L&DCC Ray Digman Knockout Trophy semi-finals, as they fell to a 111-run defeat to Colwyn Bay on Sunday.

Colwyn had home advantage, and they chose to bat first after winning the toss, posting 195-8 in their 45 overs.

Leigh’s bowlers took wickets at regular intervals, with Adam Shallcross leading the way with 4-28, but Colwyn’s J Evans and J Johansen struck 39 apiece to help their side to a competitive total.

Leigh’s innings got off to the worst possible start, as they lost openers Ross Zelem and Matthew Hibbert for ducks in the first two overs.

Things went from bad to worse as Colwyn’s attack reduced the visitors to 30-7, and the wickets continued to fall as they finished on 84, despite Richard Dempster’s (23 not out) and Hedley Molyneux’s (20) lower-order resistance.

The result compounded a disappointing weekend for Leigh, after they lost by 153 runs in the league to Ormskirk on Saturday.

Gary Knight (82) excelled as Ormskirk posted an imposing 228-5 declared, before Leigh’s batting once again collapsed in response.

Ross Zelem (19) was the only top-six batsman to reach double figures as Leigh were skittled for 75, leaving the Lancastrians just 17 points clear of relegation as the season nears its close.
