IT'S now or never for Leigh Centurions in their bid for Super League status next season.

Defeat against Championship rivals Bradford at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday (3pm) and victory for Wakefield at home to Halifax (6pm) will condemn Paul Rowley’s side to another 12 months in the second tier.

However, victory will lift Centurions over the Bulls on points difference and into a Million Pound game slot. The corresponding game of the regular season resulted in a stormy 36-24 success while the sides drew 36-all at Odsal back in July.

Leigh’s plight has been caused by four defeats in their opening five Middle 8 matches including last Sunday’s shock 34-12 loss at Halifax.

That defeat was the prelude to the start of arguably Centurions’ worst week of the season to date.

Rowley and Ryan Brierley were left empty-handed at the annual Kingstone Press Championship and League One awards dinner on Monday.

Despite leading Leigh to a second successive Championship League Leaders’ Shield and master-minding two Challenge Cup wins over Super League opposition, Rowley was pipped for Coach of the Year by Halifax’s Richard Marshall.

And Brierley, looking to add to his 2014 Young Player accolade, was denied Player of the Year by Bradford’s Lee Gaskell.

The former St Helens and Salford Red Devils playmaker received the accolade despite missing the last seven games of the regular season with a broken jaw.

He’s now doubtful for Saturday’s massive clash with bruised kidneys.

“Awards have never mattered to me,” says Rowley. “It’s nice to pick them up, of course, but I give mine away.”

Featherstone prop Jordan Baldwinson was named Brierley’s successor as Young Player while Oldham dominated the League One awards, with Lewis Palfrey and Scott Naylor being named Player and Coach of the year respectively after helping the Roughyeds clinch the League Leaders’ trophy.

Leigh suffered more disappointing news less than 24 hours earlier when forward Jamie Acton was suspended for two matches and fined £100 for striking with his knees on Halifax prop, Richard Moore.

Acton, 23, must sit out Saturday’s penultimate Middle 8s clash and next weekend’s trip to Widnes Vikings.

Gareth Hock collected an RFL caution for a lifting offence in the same match, on his return from a three game absence due to knee surgery.

However, Kurt Haggerty is available for selection after serving his own two game ban for striking Lee Smith in the home defeat to Wakefield.

Winger Adam Higson is doubtful after suffering concussion while scoring Leigh’s first try at the Shay.

But forward Matt Sarsfield is recovering after the discovery of a pin-sized hole in an artery that left him needing a blood transfusion. Sarsfield, whose last game was against Dewsbury on July 22, tweeted concerned team mate, Mickey Higham, ‘I’m getting there mate, its bin (sic) a tough ride.”
