SKIPPER Matt McKiernan led by example with bat and ball as Leigh defeated Wallasey by 100 runs to stave off the threat of relegation from the Liverpool and District ECB Premier Division.

The Beech Walk side were put into bat and set a target of 182-7 declared.

David Dove (27), McKiernan (50) and Adam Shallcross (81) spearheaded the visitors challenge as Ross Zelem (10) and David Dempster (11) only made double figures.

In reply, Wallasey knew defeat would see them relegated but Leigh did not give them any hope with wickets falling a regular intervals.

The hosts were all out for 82 in 40.3 overs with McKiernan doing most of the damage with 5-22 while Dempster (3-31), Shallcross (1-15) and Ryan Housley (1-0) contributing to the victory.
