LEIGH Miners Rangers moved to within one point of the NCL Premier Division League Leaders’ Shield with a 20-18 win at East Leeds.

The table-toppers had to withstand a strong opening from the home side at what is traditionally one of the toughest venues to visit in the division.

But they went on to build up a commanding lead that was steadily whittled away in the closing stages as they put up a withering rearguard action.

East Leeds, who are chasing a play-off spot, opened up with a six-pointer from Nathan Conroy.

Miners hit back with tries from Jimmy Muir and Martin Gray, while three Jonny Youds’ goals put them 14-6 ahead at the break.

Tom Farrimond went in for a third Miners’ try just before the hour to increase their lead to 14 points.

But they were made to sweat right to the final whistle as Easts staged a courageous fightback with converted scores for the ageless Lee Fisher and Tom Sheldrake.

Miners stood firm in the final 10 minutes, though, to hold out for a monumental win.

The team can now clinch the league if they avoid defeat in their final home league fixture against Hull Dockers on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.

It would be a first Minor Premiership title since 2008, and with the league cup final and play-offs still to come there could be a grandstand finish to the season.

Dockers are pushing for a good top-six placing themselves, however, and with two wins over Miners already this season they will be tough opponents.

The Alliance team had a walkover win against Widnes Tigers and play divisional leaders Orrell St James this weekend, while the women’s team will play old rivals Brighouse in the final of the Women’s Plate on Sunday, October 4.
