A CROWD of almost 8,400 enjoyed a feat of rugby league at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday as England ran riot in an 84-4 victory over France.

England will go into their Test series opener against New Zealand this weekend with a real feel-good factor following their record-breaking 15-try demolition.

Steve McNamara’s men showed no mercy to the understrength guests, with Wigan Warriors debutant and man-of-the-match centre John Bateman crossing twice as a 32-4 half-time lead was established.

England, appearing in Leigh for the first time since Sam Tomkins’ quartet of tries helped overhaul Wales four years ago, then powered into top gear.

More Wigan debutants – scrum half George Williams and winger Joe Burgess – got on the scoreboard, while Huddersfield Giants back rower Brett Ferres bagged an explosive hat-trick.

Further tries came from Leeds Rhinos winger Ryan Hall (2), St Helens hooker James Roby (2), Wigan second rower Liam Farrell as well as NRL forwards Tom Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs) and Josh Hodgson (Canberra Raiders).

Stand off Gareth Widdop (St George Illawarra Dragons) converted 11 of his shots at goal to help an England side featuring former Leigh Centurions prop Chris Hill beat their previous best score against France, the 73-6 result achieved in Gateshead in 1996.

Those in the bumper crowd enjoyed a feast of finishing prowess but the Kiwis, the current world number one team, are sure to present a different proposition to England at the KC Stadium in Hull on Sunday.
